Resident Evil was originally set to be adapted for the Game Boy Color by HotGen Studios, Ltd. The game was slated for release in Autumn 1999 but faced numerous delays due to programming complications. Ultimately, the project was cancelled in March 2000, leading to the creation of Resident Evil: Gaiden, developed by M4, Ltd. as a fresh title for the platform.
