Metroid Presented by the Metroid Database, or "MDbtroid" for short, is basically a graphical hack of the original NES game. The game has been improved upon in many different ways, including Samus's animation cycle, redrawn and enlarged bosses, a beautiful new opening title screen, new ending graphics, new Suitless Samus sprites, and all the enemies have been carefully redrawn. See the included .txt file for more details on what else has been changed.
Here is a youtube video demonstration link below.

Hack created by Infinity's End
Public Release: 08.15.2010 (23rd Anniversary of NES Metroid)
Hey there! Thanks for downloading this hack. I am Infinity's End, graphics artist and editor for the Metroid Database. This signifies my first foray into the wonderful world of ROM hacking! What started off as a simple hack of the title screen ended up becoming a full-blown graphics hack that is now before you. I spent countless hours redesigning the sprites of the original Metroid to hopefully match it with a style we are more familiar with in the newer 2D games, specifically Metroid Zero Mission.
I hope this will spark some renewed interest in the original title, which - let's face it - just has some very mediocre graphics. I learned a great deal about the inner workings of this game and found that there are MANY unused sprites hidden within the ROM; specifically for Samus. I'm convinced that Samus's run sequence could have looked _WAY_ better than it did originally. It is also possible they wanted to give Samus two different sides from the get go, like what they accomplished in Metroid II on GameBoy. Why these all-important sprites were never programmed into the game or abandoned, we may never know.
--HOW TO USE--
Download an IPS Patcher app (such as Lunar IPS: http://fusoya.eludevisibility.org/lips/index.html) and apply the patch to a Metroid ROM. You're done!
LUA SCRIPT USAGE:
The sprite hack also works best with the LUA script for Metroid created by Neill Corlett: http://www.neillcorlett.com/metroidlua/
The script was updated on 2012/05/23 to be compatible with the latest version of version of FCEUX which is 2.1.5.

--F.A.Q.--
CAN YOU GIVE ME THE METROID ROM? HOW DO I FIND A METROID ROM?
No, and JFGI.
CAN I HOST THIS ON MY SITE?
Absolutely! Please just give me a heads up via email when you do, though.
CAN I HACK YOUR HACK?
I don't mind if you do, just be sure to give credit where credit's due. It took quite a bit of time and effort to create this hack, and besides, it's just a respectful thing to do.
HOW DO I ACCOMPLISH X TASK OR MAKE THE GAME DO Y?
Unfortunately I cannot assist with your own hacking. There are TONS of resources available, I was easily able to find them. You should be able to as well. Romhacking.net and Zophar's Domain are good places to start. For Metroid level design, try Editroid. It's fun and very easy to use.
WHAT DOES 'NRG' MEAN?
NRG stands for "Neutronic Replenishable Globule" and is Samus's way of collecting precious life energy from enemies. Her weapons can convert living things into these globules for her to collect. ;)
