Metal Gear is an action-adventure stealth game for the Nintendo Entertainment System. This version features altered level designs and enemy placements compared to the original MSX2 release. Players assume the role of Solid Snake, a FOXHOUND operative tasked with infiltrating the fortified territory of Outer Heaven to eliminate the nuclear-capable bipedal weapon known as Metal Gear and rescue captured agents.

The game revolves around Solid Snake, an operative of the special forces unit FOXHOUND, who goes on a solo infiltration mission into the fortified state of Outer Heaven to destroy "Metal Gear", a bipedal walking tank capable of launching nuclear missiles from anywhere in the world, as well as rescue a number of fellow agents who have been captured by the enemy.
