Hello there! You're probably here because you're looking for a fun hack of Super Mario Bros, right? If so, Super Mario Bros HF could be just for you. Perhaps the main focus of SMBHF is the difficulty. Most hacks that redo levels (at least the ones that I've tried) make the game nearly impossible! I've had quite a few games where I couldn't get past the first few levels without savestates. In my opinion, games like these are just not fun. How can you enjoy a game if you have to keep saving after each major jump? I don't think you can.
That is why SMBHF's levels are about as difficult as the original game's. You will NOT find ultra-hard levels in SMBHF; if you can beat Super Mario Bros, you can beat SMBHF. These levels were created for the gamer's enjoyment, not for the gamer's frustration. Each level (1-1 through 8-4) has been changed. Some have been changed moreso than others, but each has been significantly altered.
The lesser focus of SMBHF is graphic changing. Some major graphic changes include: New floor tile, New underwater tile, New "?" blocks, New brick graphics (Borrowed from SMB2J), and others. There are also some minor graphic changes that you may notice throughout the game. (And yes, those lines on Mario's face are longer sideburns.)
If you expect SMBHF to be terribly difficult, you will probably be dissapointed. If you are here to play an enjoyable remake of the original, you should enjoy this game. Thanks for giving SMBHF a try, and I'm sure you will enjoy it! ^_^

1. INTRO
===================
Welcome to the Readme of SuperMarioBrosHF! I'm glad to see that
you're one of the few people who actually reads readme's. You're
reading this because you want information, right? You'd like to
learn some history of the game and or a little about myself,
correct? At least, I hope so, because that's the direction I'm
pulling this thing in.

2. LEGAL
===================
Now it's time to state all of the legal garbage! I am not affiliated
in any way with Nintendo, NesterJ, Lunar IPS, or any other programs
or companies that I state within unless otherwise mentioned. I do
NOT provide ROMs in any way or fashion; if you send me a ROM request
I will ignore you. Piracy is bad, mkay? On that note, Super Mario

3. VERSION HISTORY
===================
Version 1.1
-----------
Released on 3/13/2006.
Graphic changes:
New title screen,
new floor tile,
new design on coin block and fireworks flag,
new underwater block and seaweed,
longer sideburns mario,
better brick block (from SMB2J),
happier everything (smiles on clouds, bushes, etc.),
outlined goombas (looks a bit better),
koopas have different mouth motions.
The graphic changes are very minor. The game's main focus
is level changes.
Level changes:
World 3-1 minor changes
World 3-2 minor changes
World 4-3 minor changes
World 5-1 fixed (much needed)
-----------
Version 1.0
-----------
Released on 2/27/2006.
Absolutely no graphic changes whatsoever.
This version was the primary release. Every level
was changed from the original, some more so than
others.
Level that took longest to make: World 1-2. I was still learning how
to use all of the features of SMBUtility when I made this.
Least changed level: World 2-3. I don't remember taking long on this
level at all.
Most changed level: Either World 4-1 or World 5-2. 4-1 because of the
entire cloud aspect, and 5-2 because of the many area changes.
Why the hell did I make this level: World 5-1 (version 1). I made it
through this level fairly easily the first time I tried, which must
have been a miracle. Sorry for all of the carnage it caused.

4. FAQs
==================
Q: Why did you decide to hack Super Mario Bros.?
A: I started hacking with this game because I figured that it would
be a good place to get my foot in the door. I learned a lot about
what I'm going to need to do in later games because of this.
Q: Will you be making more hacks?
A: Most likely. Will they be made available anytime soon? I'm not
quite sure. My next project will either be SMB3 or Super Mario World,
and both are surely going to take long. For any updates check my
site, www.geocities.com/hfgamesmario.
Q: You're not a great hacker at all!
A: I know, I never said that I was. At this point I know much less
than I should. For this hack I used simple level editors. Graphics
editing was a simple idea but a tiresome process. I know nearly
nothing about the real coding of the game, but hopefully soon I can
change that. I'll have to if I want to make truly great hacks.
Q: Do you have any advice for those of us who have trouble with this
game?
A: Remember, you can continue when you lose all of your lives. At the
title screen press the "A" button and start, and you will begin on
the last world that you died on. Say you die on 3-3, you will begin
on 3-1. Save states help too, if they're absolutely necessary.
Q: I'm not having fun!
A: If the game is not fun to you, let me know why. I want to make the
best game that I can, and I need user feedback. E-mail me at
[email protected] for and comments/suggestions or anything.
Q: Who are you?
A: Next section.

5. ABOUT ME
====================
How's it going? I am currently a student, hopefully I will be
in the career of business technology, something in that area.
Telecommunications, maybe? I've still got a long way to go.
As a hacker, well, this is my first hack. I began getting more
interested in the process of hacking around the middle of 2005.
Most people consider me to be a funloving guy, and I agree. I'm
fairly carefree. If you have any other questions, contact me.

6. Special thanks
====================
Special thanks goes to Nintendo, without whom I would not be very
interested in gaming at all. Thanks also to the creators of NesterJ,
Lunar IPS, SMBUtility, YY-Mario Editor, and all of the other programs
that I used. Thanks to my friends Ben, Brandon(Jiggy!), Jake, Scott,
and any other friends who helped me in the process of making my game.
Those people were the main testers/inspiration for the game.
Well, that's about all that I have to talk about. I hope you enjoy
playing my game, and I hope to see you again!
