The Lord of King is a 2D action platform video game for the Nintendo Entertainment System, utilizing a hack and slash mechanism and a magic casting system. The game is structured in 6 main levels, each divided into two parts. After each level, the progression of the story is presented through cutscenes.
The protagonist begins with an axe, which can be upgraded by acquiring a power-up depicted as a small axe. Further upgrades transform the weapon into a spear, and ultimately a big sword, the most formidable melee weapon in the game.
The game's magic system allows players to cast three different spells, governed by a magic meter. The "Bind" spell can freeze time and enemies, "Blast" produces fireballs that eradicate visible enemies, and "Bolt" generates a lightning strike with similar effects to "Blast".

The player can cast three magic spells which using is limited by the magic meter. The first is "Bind", which stops the time altogether with the enemies in the level. The second is "Blast", which casts fire balls destroying all enemies visible on the screen at the time of the casting. The third is "Bolt", which has the form of a lightning strike and acts similarly to "Blast".
