This is mostly a level hack of Super Mario Bros. with a bit of hex editing. It is somewhat harder than the original SMB1 (but not hard like Kaizo or Air).

This is mostly a level hack of Super Mario Bros. for NES. All 8 worlds
have been extensively hacked, including changes to the pointers and
rearrangement of the maps. You're unlikely to recognize much from the
original game. The enemies move a bit faster, and the bullet bill
cannons fire more quickly. If you beat the game and take on the hard
mode, you're in for it...
It is harder than SMB1, and gets pretty tough in World 8, but most of
the hack should be beatable for an experienced Mario player without
using save states. To help you out, you're given 5 lives with every new
game instead of just 3. Remember that you can hold down A and press
Start to continue from the beginning of that world. (This also works if
your rom starts you at 0-1 with just Start).
Yes, I have beaten my own hack (in the non-hard mode, anyway) with no
save-states or game overs, but I used both warp zones.
- There are 2 warp zones in the game. Remember, warp zones aren't
limited to underground areas! There was a third (in 1-2 to world 2), but
it kept screwing up, so I removed the access to it.
- Every x-1 level has a hidden 1-UP mushroom. As in the original SMB1,
you have to either collect all coins in the last x-3 world or warp to
the x-1 world to get the 1-UP.
- There are plenty of coin rooms and cloud bonus areas and such around.
However, some pipes will take you backwards in the level, like in SMB2J.
You might have to use a pipe or vine to reach the end of some levels!
They won't always be in the same levels. In fact, of the 5 vines in the
game, NONE of them are in the same level as a vine in SMB1. Coin rooms
are no longer limited to x-1 and x-2 levels.
- Sometimes, you have to be a particular size of Mario (Regular or
Super/Fire) to reach certain areas. However, any size of Mario should be
able to finish every level.
- Having trouble with worlds 6 and 7? You can skip them entirely with a
warp zone.
I tried to make it fairly bug-free, but there are the usual issues with
sprites glitching out, particularly in areas with cheep-cheeps and such.
Please report any bugs to me at
[email protected], so that
they might be fixed in a future release.
Yes, I know the flagpole no longer has a sound effect. That's because I
ended up overwriting that part of the code to add in a small workaround
for 5-1. Formerly, it was possible for Mario to "catch" the lift in 5-1
near the flag while sliding down the pole, which caused him to fall and
the game to freeze.
