More than a decade ago, Nintendo once had a foothold in Taiwan through its subsidiary, Nintendo Phuten. However, in 2014, Nintendo made the decision to shutter that operation. Despite this, the gaming giant didn’t completely walk away from Taiwan. Since the closure, Nintendo Hong Kong has taken charge, yet the company maintained a diligent presence in the region.
Now, exciting news is on the horizon for Taiwanese gamers! It appears that Nintendo's efforts have borne fruit, as the company has just announced the establishment of a new subsidiary in Taiwan. Although the formation took place a week ago, it has only just been officially publicized. Nintendo’s motivation for this move is clear: they aim to “further strengthen our business base in the Taiwan market and improve the quality of customer service.”
This new subsidiary won’t carry on the legacy of its predecessor in terms of name. Instead, it will be known as Nintendo of Taiwan and will have its headquarters in Taipei. Most notably, the new Nintendo of Taiwan will officially commence operations at the beginning of the next fiscal year on April 1st.
