I will put this right up top: the most common dump of the Japanese version of this game has a bad checksum. All there is to do if your patch fails to apply, is to use this tool to fix checksum in the rom before applying your patch:
Thanks to Retroplay for bringing this to my attention and finding a solution. I can't do anything from my end, the problem is not my patch, but with the ROM dumped online. Just fix the bad checksum with the tool above, then patch it, that's it.
Anyway, this is a straight forward hack that simply replaces the green-colored "blood" with the more appropriate red blood. It is more in lieu with what the original developers had in mind, but Namco could not approve due to the strict censorship at the time. The developers have mentioned so in interviews.
If you like the original green slime, this hack is obviously not for you.
This is a strictly color-editing hack, no further changes were made. The game is left just as you remember, but blood is now red, that is all.
Update v1.1: The two spots featured in screenshots three and four that still had green blood have been fixed.
Update v1.2: A patch for the Japanese version has been made, including changes done in 1.1. No changes were made to the American patch, which remains the exact same.
All maps of the game have been carefully verified afterwards, and there seems to be no more green blood anywhere, so that should be it. There is an elusive pair of sprites I could not find, more details in the readme file. Enjoy.

But please, be patient, and again, if you're having trouble patching this game, it's going to be the bad checksum that plagues the Japanese dump commonly found online for sure, NOT my patch. Again, fix checksum, and it will work just fine.
