Final Fantasy II: Protect/Shell Routine Mod is a patch for the Super Nintendo version of the game that alters the effect of the Protect and Shell spells. Instead of providing a fixed defense boost, these spells now enhance defense and magic defense based on the spell's power. The mod enables Protect to be used in the final battle, although its impact may be limited due to the last boss's attack dynamics.
This modifies the behavior of the spell subroutines used by Protect/Armor and Shell. Normally, spells using these subroutines increase the targets’ defense or magic defense by a constant amount. With this patch, however, the subroutines will instead cause the targets’ defense or magic defense to be increased by an amount equal to the spell's power.
A side effect of this patch is that it allows Protect (though not Shell) to be used in the final battle, where it normally cannot be used. However, the final boss does not use physical attacks so this should not be an issue unless used in tandem with a patch which causes the last boss to physically attack.
This patch does not un-dummy the Protect/Armor or Shell white spells, and does not change their default spell power of 1. This means that unless you apply another patch or modification, this patch itself will have no measurable effect on the game.
This patch has only been tested on headered FF2US v1.1
