Final Fantasy III: Smoke and Mirrors is a fan-made patch for the Super Nintendo version of Final Fantasy III, also known as Final Fantasy VI. This patch addresses a gameplay bug related to the Muddle status effect, which causes party members to target allies or use offensive spells on enemies. It modifies Smoke Bomb functionality so that it correctly allows the party to escape battles, regardless of Muddle status. The patch is compatible with both headered and non-headered ROM files.
Muddle status always makes attacks target the wrong party. For example, Muddled party members may attack party members or use Cure spells on monsters. Unfortunately, the same is true for Smoke Bombs; while it would normally make the party escape a battle, when used by a Muddled character, it instead makes the enemies flee, meaning that you win the battle. This patch forces Smoke Bombs to ignore Muddle status.

PURPOSE:
There is an easy way to win a lot of battles. First, cast Muddle on one of your party members. Second, before he or she receives the Muddle status, have him or her use a Smoke Bomb. Third, watch in awe as all of the enemies disappear in a cloud of smoke, and voila, you've won the battle. This patch ensures that the use of Smoke Bombs is unaffected by Muddle status, meaning that they will only work on your party.
