In 2002 I released Super Mario Kart - The Impala Battles. Back then it was the first Super Mario Kart mod to be released on Romhacking.net.
It was the time long before Epic Edit saw the light of day, so editing Mario Kart was still a slow and difficult process. The limitations at the time caused some issues in The Impala Battles I couldn't solve. Together with Stifu I started working on Epic Racers, an ambitious follow-up to The Impala Battles. During my work on Epic Racers I kept thinking about The Impala Battles, and the issues that could be solved, now that Epic Edit was there to edit overlays and A.I.
Today, almost 18 years after the release of The Impala Battles I'm proud to present an updated version which fixes all the issues players had with the original mod. You can see this new version as a small appetizer to the release of Epic Racers, which is nearing a finished state. Until that release, please enjoy the classic Impala Battles once again with your friends!

*Four New Battle Courses*
*************************
Impala Battle 1 - Get spooked in the Ghost Valley!
We'll start our new battle in the Ghost Valley! Make use of the tight corners or try a bold move by bumping away the borders.
Can your opponent deal with the pitfalls you create?
Impala Battle 2 - The floor is lava!
Steaming lava rivers and wide open arena's! Hiding behind the brick walls is key in this battle!
The small island in the middle might just save you from a red shell in time!
Impala Battle 3 - Cool it off at the beach!
A battle on the beach! All the deep water pools makes it tricky to hit your opponent.
Pay good attention to his whereabouts to hit him when he comes up for air!
Impala Battle 4 - Mud masters!
Time to get dirty! Fight each other in this sandbox! The one way street can get you out of tight spot.
While the mud pool makes for an ideal arena to settle this battle once and for all!

*How to play*
*************
1. You'll need a SNES emulator that is able to play Super Mario Kart. SNEX9X is a good emulator that runs on most platforms.
1a. If you have a powerful PC, try BSNES. It will make Mode 7 games look a LOT better if you use the HD Mode 7 settings.
2. Download the correct Super Mario Kart ROM (see the start of the ReadME)
3. With http://www.romhacking.net/hash/ you can check whether you have the correct ROM.
4. Go to: https://www.romhacking.net/patch/ to patch the ROM.
5. Start the patched ROM in your emulator.
6. Have fun!
