Final Fantasy II is a Japanese role-playing game developed by Square for the Nintendo Entertainment System. Released in North America in 1991, it is the second installment in the Final Fantasy series, despite being the fourth in Japan. The game features a top-down perspective, an innovative leveling system based on usage rather than experience points, and random encounters with enemies.
The fourth entry in the Final Fantasy series was released as Final Fantasy II in the West, because the second and the third games were not released there at the time. The game is a Japanese-style RPG with top-down world map navigation, automatic leveling up, and random enemy encounters.
